These are amazing. Perfect to make in Fall
I like to use both cheddar and Havarti cheeses for each sandwich
4 slices of your favorite bread (sourdough, brioche, or whole wheat work best)
4 Tbls. apple butter
4 to 6 oz. (2 slices per sandwich) of sharp cheddar, Gruyère, or Havarti cheese (sliced or grated)
small granny smith apple, thinly sliced
2 to 3 Tbls. butter (softened)
Butter the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter on the outside of each slice of bread.
Add Apple Butter: On the inside of bread slices, spread a generous layer of apple butter.
Layer the fillings: Place half of your cheese (1 slice) on one slice of bread. Add the thinly sliced fresh apples on top of the cheese, then cover with the remaining cheese (2nd slice). Do for each sandwich you are assembling.
Assemble: Put the second slice of bread on top (apple butter side facing inward).
Cook slowly: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Place sandwiches in the pan and cook slowly for 4 to 5 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crisp.
Flip and Melt: Flip the sandwiches carefully. Cook for another 3 to 5 minutes until the other side is golden and the cheese inside is completely melted.
Serve: Remove from the heat, let it cool for a minute, slice it in half, and enjoy.
Makes 2 sandwiches. To make more, adjust ingredients accordingly.
